winter wardrobe wishing

If you're in the market for a totally demoralizing timewaster besides Facebook, might I suggest Polyvore? You get to pretend like you're shopping, spend a bunch of time laying out all your "purchases" just so, and then remember that you don't actually own any of the things you've chosen, nor will you any time in the foreseeable future. No matter, I like doing it because when I'm shopping in real life I have to spend money, and, in any case, I almost always wind up putting everything back where I found it when I see the checkout line. Why are checkout lines so daunting to me? Who knows, but that may be one of the Universe's small kindnesses -- I've saved a bunch of money with my last-minute wussing out. Today's Polyvore trip wasn't actually all that depressing. I had a revelation the other day, after getting the very first sturdy winter coat of adulthood (at 30 -- what's the matter with me?), that I have almost every piece I deem essential to a grownup lady's wardrobe. I can -- and, obviously, will -- continue to supplement, but I have shoes for all seasons, coats for all occasions, a nice all-purpose bag and some smaller special ones, a few pairs of pants that fit well, a funeral outfit and a half closet full of cocktail attire, plus sundry tops and dresses. I even own a handful of pairs of socks, which, if you know me, may come as a surprise; I am a recovering hater of socks.
George and I (okay, mostly I) have fun picking out his clothes in the morning and I hope getting dressed is something he always enjoys. Boys' clothes are so boring and lame but I do my best to find colorful, fun things that feel nice on his skin and make him feel fancy. I know I've done a good job when he stands up proudly and smooths out his shirt, like ooh, I look GOOD.
Another reason I don't despair too much during these faux-shopping excursions: I'm pretty crafty. I have a feeling you may see George in some mama-made versions of a few of those little numbers above. But, you know, if anyone wants to go ahead and buy us that Marc Jacobs for Bugaboo stroller, our doorstep is always gift-ready.

I've got those Danskos - totally worth the $. They are my wear-everywhere black shoe.
yes! funny, actually, i have some brown ones (admittedly not danskos, but ones i bought with an ll bean gift card), that complete many a hippie-mom outfit of mine. they're exactly as comfy as the hype says and look really good with the crazy high-waisted, wide-legged jeans of the 70s.
