All drenched in milk and holy water

There have been some rough days. We are at vastly different developmental stages which seem to be conflicting. Some of us are growing teeth; some of us are trying to become Legitimate Business People. We are not all sleeping. We are trying to assert ourselves -- assert our independence from one another -- claiming or reclaiming identities we haven't quite sorted out yet. There are carts being put before horses, careening around the house, toward the door, only to pause at the threshold to notice the weather and head ruefully back inside.

I do a thing when it becomes too much. When I want to scream and slap and say horrible things (because these feelings happen; nobody says so, because it's taboo to feel ill will toward one's own children, but every moment does not feel like the blessing it is marketed). I finger through the records until I find the one. I take it out of the sleeve and put it on the turntable. I don't tell anyone where I was when I first heard it; I don't invite anyone to dance; I don't ask for approval; I don't apologize for it's cliché as it relates to people my age. I put the needle in the groove and I sing. I know every word.

And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you

They leave me alone without being asked. I am not a good singer, but I am especially bad at matching these notes though I know them all by heart. Every inflection. I don't care. I don't try. I belt it out.

The earth looks better from a star that's right above from where you are

As the trumpet swells from devotional to apology, I spin in the middle of the living room while my children busy themselves or look on. I wonder what they think, if they'll remember this record.

I will float until I learn how to swim

If they'll think of it as sacred, as the one mama put on without explanation. As the one that signaled and diverted impending collapse. What words will stick in their minds. If they'll inherit the significance of this or any of "my" records, requiring (as I do) silence while they play, judging people's character by their ability to talk over the best parts. I wonder how it's understood that this is mine and not theirs, not ours. It's the only space they give me. I would never do it in front of anyone else; I treat it as alone time, as something privy only to the people who have inhabited my body.

Ghost, ghost, I know you live within me

And when it's done, I take it off the turntable, put it back in its sleeve and slide it into the middle of the shelf. Invulnerable to attack as the ends are prone, as close to a secret one can keep in plain sight. Hoarse and sweaty, I resume life, no questions asked except the occasional "do you feel better?" Calmer, myself, feeling understood by that black disc if no one else. Buffered and bolstered by familiarity when the familial is too much.

Was it Mae West? Mark Twain? Abe Lincoln?

As I buckled Zelda into her carseat the other day, and George waited in the grass, picking up and throwing walnuts from the tree I'm convinced will one day crush me in my sleep, he asked why it wasn't snowing.

"It's so cold! Where's the snow?"
"Well," I told him, "conditions have to be just right. It takes more than cold weather to make snow. You need water in the sky, too."
He was insistent that I was wrong -- a common refrain these days -- and that somehow, something had gone wrong and our snow was either on its way, temporarily lost, or had been stolen by another city.
"It doesn't work that way," I said. "If the sky over our city has snow in it, we get snow. Snow is just like rain; it happens when it happens."

Well, that did it. I'd insinuated, apparently, that snow wasn't special, and I was, in addition, completely mistaken. Since this was the hundredth thing I'd been wrong about that morning (former offenses including the way I cooked oatmeal, telling him that T plus H makes a "th" sound, and saying that people's lips get blue when they're cold) George and I had both had it.

I know the feeling of wanting to be right. I know it so well that I can see it bubbling up in others. I see their feet find a place to plant and their fingers wrap tightly around the idea they're peddling, and I know(!) that when that grasp turns white-knuckled there is no forward movement to be made. With some people, I'm good at walking away. With my son? I often decide to attempt to break his steely will with "common sense" and convincing, very respectable phrases like "I've been alive for 29 years longer than you have!" Can you guess how well it works?

The internet can tell you who said "I don't have to attend every argument I'm invited to." Despite liking this quote very much, I tend to forget it when I most need to remember it. If my goal is to impart, before we get to preschool, the exact process by which snow ends up on our lawn -- if that is really and truly integral to the further functioning of our day -- then I guess the snow argument would've been a valuable use of our time. But if teaching my kids that other opinions exist, that knowledge is transient, that ideas evolve, that it's okay to be wrong... well, yelling my credentials at a four year old is probably not the way. When he was done pointing at me and shouting his insistence that our snow was lost, and that I was either fibbing or wrong, he couldn't quite tell, my senses returned to me and I asked him if he was disappointed.

"I was really hoping for snow. You said it was going to be so cold. I thought there would be snow." His little downturned face, his boot kicking the frozen grass. I know that feeling, too. I feel that feeling; I just feel it at meteorologists, not my mom. "When you get home from school, do you want to learn about snow and cut out some snowflakes?" I asked. He nodded and wiped his eyes.

That afternoon, after school, as he ate his sandwich and I refilled Zelda's water in the kitchen, he called from the dining room, "Hey mama! You were right! The snow is just like rain. It happens when it happens. Maybe it will happen soon."
"I hope so!" I said. And just like that, we were back on the same team. A team I need to remember does not require lockstep agreement.

On Goldie Blox and The Benefit of the Doubt

The new commercial for Kickstarter darling Goldie Blox is making the rounds on social media, thanks in no small part to its parent-friendly reworking of the Beastie Boys' song Girls. And... I'm not as impressed as everyone else seems to be.

As the parent of two fairly gender stereotypical children -- a baseball loving, monster truck obsessed boy and a baby-toting, tutu wearing girl -- I'm always on the lookout for ways to mess with their natural dispositions. I'm an agitator like that, and as a result, my son will still often choose pastel or sparkly over the alternative, and my daughter plays unquestioningly with k'nex, Lego and other age-appropriate building toys. They have no real bias, yet, and all they require of their building materials is that they be sturdy and workable. My daughter is not confused by the lack of a plot, nor is she drawn to any particular color of blocks. But, okay, we are not your average STEM-disadvantaged family.

the faces of revolutionLet's talk for a minute about those families. Maybe mom works outside of the home. Maybe she doesn't. But whether she does or not, we'll assume that a family in need of a STEM-centered boost for its girls is not headed up by a STEM-employed mother. What's the likelihood that she's a stay at home mom? Doll play -- something singled out by the Goldie Blox commercial as an alternative to "us[ing] our brains" -- closely resembles the activities of a caregiver, doesn't it? And oh, Goldie Blox, I know you aren't disparaging those infamous non-intellectual pursuits we brainless moms busy ourselves with... like raising everyone. Okay, okay. Just a misunderstanding. Empowerment doesn't have to come at others' expense, and when I saw pink-swathed "girly girls" on the receiving end of three death stares in that commercial, it wasn't personal. It was a death stare pointed at the institution the pink-lovers represent, right? I'm sure the kids will pick up on that nuance, and not perpetuate the age-old "tomboy vs. princess girl" dynamic. Whew.

Moving on to the ways Goldie Blox is smashing stereotypes: the subject matter of the accompanying book for the first engineering set. A beauty pageant! Do I need to elaborate? At least the character loses? But don't worry; her friends use their engineering skills to build her a float so she can ride in the parade just like the actual reigning princess. The quality of the story is abysmal -- somewhere between a glorified instruction booklet and uninspired rhyming exercise -- as though the makers of Goldie Blox aren't even fully invested in the (arguably flawed) idea that girls require verbal engagement.

Do I buy the idea that, given our culture and the dearth of resources for engaging girls in the "hard" sciences, we need some kind of hail mary, and that the likelihood is high of that hail mary coming in a pink package? YES. Do I think we all need to celebrate the first product that capitalizes on that fact as a victory for tiny mainstream feminists and their princess averse parents? No. We can be discerning on behalf of our daughters. On behalf of all our children! We can ask that companies not play into the trope of smart girls versus pretty girls and insult the less mechanically inclined among us in their commercials, while their actual products glorify the worst of the beauty industrial complex. We can stop giving for-profit companies the benefit of the doubt, or credit for a deeply flawed "small step" or a "good try." We can and should demand high quality, not just a shiny feel-good gimmick wrapped up in a catchy piece of our own childhood.

I can hear the same old gaslit refrain starting up: some people will complain about anything. Doesn't it get old, being the cynic? And, yeah, you know: sometimes it does. But what gets older is seeing money made by companies that perpetuate the same old hurtful stereotypes with a side serving of education. They are savvy, hip -- they know their demographic, they pay the appropriate lipservice, and they earn widespread backing by people who rightly put their faith in the girls the product purports to uplift. But what our girls need is engagement. Real engagement, not the kind that comes in a poorly written storybook. No gimmicks. Role models. Support. Trust. The freedom to explore, and fail. The freedom to like pink or not, to love babies or not, to be a physicist or a housekeeper, instilled with the knowledge that nary a person alive does a job without using her brain, and empowerment is, and always has been, free for the giving or taking.

This is a Joint Review and Giveaway of the Jade Donut-Shaped Pendant from Smart Mom Jewelry between Natural Parents Network and Very Very Fine.

About the Jade Donut-Shaped Signature Pendant

credit: Smart Mom JewelryThe entirely mama-staffed Smart Mom Jewelry is really on to something with their teething bling. Made of baby-safe silicone with no PVC, phthalates, or latex, the pliable pendants and bangles aren't just for mothers, of course, but anyone holding and caring for a little one. The jade pendant provides a convincing approximation of real stone on a silky cord with a discreet breakaway clasp: a real necklace, not a glorified teething toy on a string! Durable and fun, this is an incognito teether that won't be outgrown before all baby's chompers are in, and won't be dropped, stroller-side, on the street, never to be seen again.

    Our Experience

Because I'm a jewelry minimalist who favors single, delicate chains, I've learned (the hard way) to keep my neck unadorned while Zelda is small. It's fun to have a baby safe go-to accessory, and she uses the pendant not only as a teether, but as something to touch while she nurses, cutting down on the dreaded twiddling that often plagues nursing mothers of toddlers. The sturdy construction stood up to much yanking by my enthusiastic girl, as well as plenty of munching while she worked on her incisors. I was skeptical of the jade finish but love how bright, shiny and realistic it looks, as well as how seamlessly it blends in to my mostly neutral wardrobe. A 21 month old with a near full set of teeth has barely put a mark in the tough silicone, so I'm confident that it would last from the gummy first stages of teething until the inclinations to gnaw subside.

    Why Smart Mom Jewelry?

When founder Amy Maurer Creel lost her sister-in-law to a congenital heart defect, she was inspired to help mothers and honor the memory of her sister-in-law -- a clothing designer -- by starting her own company, and creating a useful, stylish product. Staffing that company with mothers who are free to bring their children to work, and partnering with Dress for Success, a group that helps disadvantaged women fulfill their own professional dreams, Amy has done well by her sister-in-law's inspiration.

    Buy it!

You can purchase your own Signature Pendant at Smart Mom Jewelry for $19.99. With so many options for style and color, ranging from shimmery hearts to moonstone rings and the new smaller beaded "Gemstones" line, as well as bracelets, there's sure to be something for the mamas on your gift list. Or, treat yourself!

    WIN IT!
